Lavender Bay - A Quick Guide

Lavender Bay View

Lavender Bay is the perfect place to go if you want to admire some amazing and unique vantage points of Sydney Harbour but to also 'get away from it all'. Situated near Milson’s Point, this small suburb on the Northern side provides a relaxing escape without the long excursion.

Things To Do

Lavender Bay is all about relaxation; it's definitely a slower pace around this small area tucked away. The main thing that people in the know would do is visit Wendy Whiteley's Secret Garden. Although it's not so much of a secret anymore, it's often very quiet, you can often be there just by yourself. In this garden, you can learn about the life of Wendy Whiteley, wife of the Australian artist Brett Whiteley. It will allow you to understand the purpose of this beautiful place and appreciate it even more. Most people enjoy their time here with a picnic and we suggest you do the same.

The Lavender Bay foreshore houses something quite interesting and historical; the sculptures of Arthur 'Art' Barton. If you do this highly recommended walk look out for his little sculpture works; to view what you can find Sydney.com.au have covered them with some great visuals, here. This is a really great way to keep the kids entertained too!

Another good walk to do is the Lavender Bay to Kirribilli Harbourside Walk. This short and easy walk takes about 45 minutes unless of course you want to stop along the way. You'll walk around Lavender Bay close to the water's edge, pass the famous Luna Park, then on to Milson's Point and under the Sydney Harbour Bridge and then round to Kirribilli which is on the Eastern side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. More information on this walk here.

Suited For

Lavender Bay is a really quaint and peaceful area which makes it perfect for couples and also great for the family. If the kids do get restless there is always Luna Park; free to get in and lots to keep them entertained. For the individual traveller also a lovely option, lots of sunny and shaded grassy areas to read a book and to take pictures; the sun always seems to capture this area really well.

Food & Drinks

Lavender Bay does have some very nice eateries whether it's for breakfast, lunch or dinner. For breakfast or lunch we advise you to go to Bay Ten Espresso - a trendy cafe that has great reviews; they do lovely sandwiches, coffees and you can even grab protein shakes there. Billi’s cafe is also a great choice thanks to their tasty burgers. For fine dining you must go to Sails on Lavender Bay; this restaurant offers an incredible view, perfect for a romantic dinner and so amazing that some people choose it for their wedding venue. If you want a great cheap eat and a few drinks the not-for-profit Kirribilli Club is the one; stunning views and great grub, a cheerful venue and one to visit.

Getting there

Lavender Bay is super easy to get to. The easiest way to get there is by train to the Milson's Point station and then it's a 5 minute walk. You can also get off at the North Sydney station and then it's a short walk down hill, again about 5 minutes. You can also catch a ferry over to the Milson's Point stop outside of Luna Park. By bus take the 227, 230 (for North side) and the 243, 249 (for cross city) which stops at Alfred Street right under the bridge at Milson's Point.
